Ran When Parked by Rory Doyle
Ran When Parked depicts a small, used sailboat for sale on the front lawn of a residence surrounded by trees and wildlife. In states of neglect, both the boat and surrounding environment contrast the vibrant palette and the traditionally elegant history of sailboat racing.
Ran When Parked pays homage to Stuart Davis; an early American modernist painter. His work used bold palettes and primitive shapes that built compositions from legible to quite abstract with goals of influencing the sociopolitical environment of America. My work shares similar attributes of leveraging colour and shapes to create relationships of colour and scale. While not large, the departure to nod to Davis was both enjoyable and challenging, finding harmony in negative space and asymmetrical elements.
