ARTIST STATEMENT

"When the grey whale graced Vancouver’s waters during the summer of 2026, right as the city prepared to host FIFA, it felt like a quiet cosmic signal from the universe that this was Vancouver’s moment to shine on the global stage. Capturing that exact collision of local magic and world-class energy, this piece stays true to my signature style filled with playfulness, constant motion, and bunny cameos.

The title De Chilena translates to Chilean-style, the Spanish term for a bicycle kick, serving as a dual tribute to the athletic feat itself and a subtle nod to Spain taking home the tournament trophy.

At the core of the scene is Hudson, named as he hops over the downtown towers of Bentall Centre while setting up for that very acrobatic strike. His right hand is gloved to help prop his foot up, while his bare left hand shows off gold rings spelling out VAN, a heart medallion representing passion, and an 18k rose gold watch with an opaline dial set to 3:30 PM for a quick corner store snack run. A winged grey whale leaps over his back carrying an Aquabus ferry while duo white bunnies hitch a ride, all set against a backdrop of sprouting coniferous trees, mountain peaks, floating smiley bubbles, and dynamic urban energy. High-energy, whimsical, and deeply rooted in West Coast culture, this piece celebrates a landmark moment in Vancouver history." - Chairman Ting
